If you're completing a professional internship to replace the practical exam for the State Exam, this program is tailor-made for you: we'll work together on the written internship exam , the second written exam , and the oral exam , with special attention to the portfolio , which strategically documents the activities carried out in the firm/institution. All of this follows the method you already know from our website: read the exam paper, identify the questions, use the right tools, and produce a clear and assessable solution. State Exam

How the Internship Exam Works (Updated Overview)

  • General Structure 2025. MUR Ordinance no. 428 of June 19, 2025, confirms the format with a practical exam (in person) , one or two written exams , and an oral exam, with a schedule determined by the universities. Many universities maintain two written exams (e.g., Polytechnics and IUAV), others a single written exam. Always check the announcement for your university.

  • Internship program. Various locations require a written internship exam , which essentially replaces the traditional internship : your actual internship experience is assessed through a report/portfolio and a dedicated written exam (e.g., Milan Polytechnic). Check the procedures and requirements in your location's announcement.

  • Regulatory framework (Presidential Decree 328/2001). The Section A and B tests are defined by Presidential Decree 328/2001 (two written tests, one practical test, and one oral test; Section A is more complex). Certain exemptions between sections/sectors are also provided for, as established by the decree.

What do written tests for interns ask (with real-world examples)?

1) Written test “Internship” (Section A – example Polimi, 25 July 2024)

The candidate must describe the internship experience related to a specific project, highlighting his/her contribution on aspects such as:

  • design process and relationship with current regulations ;

  • authorization process and building permits;

  • Technical documentation developed. Polytechnic University of Milan

2) Second written test (Section A – 1st session 2025)

Examples of released themes:

  • Public space as social infrastructure (cohesion, inclusion, resilience);

  • Climate change: mitigation/adaptation strategies in architecture and cities;

  • Accessibility/Universal Design as a Right and Design Approach The report is in essay form, with cultural and regulatory references and case studies, in a maximum of 4 pages .

3) Written Section B – Junior Architect (e.g. July 31, 2024)

Critical-descriptive essays on: historical, modern or contemporary architecture , arguing choices and motivations starting from one's own path.

💡 Note: The exam examples and procedures vary by location and exam session; always refer to the announcement from the university where you're taking the exam.

The portfolio that replaces practice: what it should show (and how we train it on-going)

For candidates who skip the practical test through an internship, the portfolio must clearly, verifiably and consistently document:

  • Projects followed (title, context, objectives, constraints);

  • Personal contribution (phases, activities, deliverables: documents, reports, calculations, practices);

  • Regulatory references actually applied (NTA/PRG/PGT, DPR 380/2001, fire prevention, barriers, landscape, etc.);

  • Outcomes and learnings (critical issues, choices, coordination). During the course, we perform regular portfolio reviews to align it with the committees' requests and the internship statement .

Our teaching method (the one on your site, applied to trainees)

The lessons follow your method : reading the outline → identifying the issues → choosing the tools → applying the solution , with structured problem solving (APS/FARE), clear formats, and iterative assessments. This allows the internship experience to be transformed into a convincing technical-critical text and to connect the second written exam (transversal topics) and the oral exam (regulations, ethics, construction process). The "single oral exam" of the Architect State exam seems easier and more feasible than the traditional exam for which you had to prepare three written tests and a final oral exam; but I must say that taking the exam in a single oral test is not as simple as it seems, there are many factors that influence the examination procedure and can reverse the result in a few minutes. The first and "most important" factor is rightly the preparation, it is necessary to master all the subjects of the exam both the architectural / urban planning , the regulations, discipline and ethics. Other important factors are anxiety, concentration, command of the Italian language (considering that there are many foreign graduates in Italy who want to take the exam), the ability to form an analytical / descriptive speech, and etc.

I am the tutor of the preparation course for the State Architect exam since 2015 and below I want to give you some advice on how to prepare for the exam in order to have a high chance of passing it at the first try;

The questions you may ask before starting to study are: HOW, WHAT and WHEN to start studying for the state exam.

"The best time to start studying is 3/4 months before the exam, we must consider that the study time for each person can vary."

What are the references to study? The references to study are many in the market, the most famous is the Prontuario by Fabio Alberto Ceccarelli, there are other architect's manuals such as, Manuale per l'esercizio delle professione e l'esame di stato. Honestly, I suggest you study the manual easier to understand because you have to remember everything during the examination and some handbooks are very complicated to understand! do not trust the handouts of other guys who have taken the exam because they can omit many important details, always study the original documents and regulations.

Remember the questions are not only of the regulations but also of the project try to see many contemporary national and international projects on the sites and form an analytical discourse of the topics such as the concept, the structure, energy consumption, the reference standards and the building process.

If you have to take the exam in Milan, on the site

" https://www.lombardiabeniculturali.it/architetture/ " there are a loto of projects from the modern and contemporary period.

TO REDUCE ANXIETY YOU NEED TO DO MANY EXAM SIMULATIONS.

There are several ways to get the exam questions:

1- The online oral exam gives us this chance to hear other candidates' exam remotely and form an idea of how the exam can proceed. *

* n.b. each examination board can focus on one topic rather than the other and it is best to hear the questions of your examination board.

2- The whatsapp groups where candidates share exam questions.

3- Being the tutor of at least 50 candidates since June 2020 I have a collection of more than 70 questions from all exam disciplines with the right answers in a pdf file. You can purchase the file on this site.

attention

STUDYING THE EXAM QUESTIONS ONLY IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO PASS THE EXAM.

In the end my suggestion to pass the exam in a short time is to enroll in a preparation course with an affordable price that includes the complete package for preparation for the State exam.

The corso esame di Stato Online has numerous advantages with the aim of making you pass the exam at first shot;

  • the course does not end and continues until the exam is passed at no additional cost.

  • employ a unique method in the curriculum

  • the lessons are entirely online, they are not video recorded and the members have a personal tutor who follows you in all phases of the study.

  • there is the possibility to take at least 5 specific exam simulations for each exam location.

  • The course offers all study materials on an a platform called Arcloud and there is also the possibility to download everything in pdf.

  • it is possible to start the course at any time and there are no limits on lessons and revisions.
